Why Get Involved?

  • Epilepsy is everywhere.
  • Epilepsy affects 110,000 people in our 18-county service area, 3.4 million in the USA and 65 million around the world.
  • One in three adults knows someone with epilepsy.
  • In six out of 10 people with epilepsy, the cause is unknown.
  • Anyone can have a seizure at any time.
  • Epilepsy can change lives, impede development, affect learning, cause accidents, and even result in early death.

Adapted from the traditional Mardi Gras celebration held yearly in New Orleans, our Philadelphia-style Gala features an open bar complete with hurricanes, a three course French Creole sit-down dinner, silent and live auctions, lively entertainment and dancing to a nine piece band. Extravagant decorations, beads, jesters and masks all add to the festive decor.

The EFEPA’s Mardi Gras Gala annually honors a prominent business or community leader from the eastern Pennsylvania area as Mardi Gras King or Queen. Joining the royalty in festivities are Philadelphia’s top neurologists, hospitals, pharmaceutical and medical device companies, prominent business leaders, community members and volunteers. Together they come out to celebrate the EFEPA and our accomplishments with a shared goal of improving the quality of life of individuals living with epilepsy, their families and caregivers.

The EFEPA is proud to be part of the Epilepsy Foundation’s nationwide Walk to End Epilepsy! From the East Coast to the West Coast, members of the epilepsy community are uniting with a shared vision. We invite you to join the movement to End Epilepsy and the many challenges associated with this diagnosis.

By participating in the Walk to End Epilepsy – Pennsylvania Series, you are not only uniting with people across the nation but igniting a spark right in your own backyard. The Walks are non-competitive, family friendly, and open to the public. Our Walks are designed to be a fun day of celebration all while raising critical funds and awareness for the EFEPA and the local epilepsy community. Each Walk is complete with music, food, entertainment, networking, giveaways and prizes. The Walks are free to register with fundraising strongly encouraged.

Ways to Advance the Cause

Advocate

Epilepsy should not keep anyone from living a full and happy life. This includes access to treatment, medications, employment and resources, as well as living in a community that doesn’t discriminate. However, the reality is that, despite the fact that 1 in 26 people will have epilepsy at some point in their life, the general public is either misinformed or unaware of the disorder, and lawmakers may not have all the necessary information to act in the best interest of those affected by seizures.

That’s where you can make a difference. Check out our Legislation and Advocacy section and learn about different policies that can affect you or someone you love. Then, Speak Out! Contact your local representative, share information on social media and in the public. It’s amazing how far a few moments of education can truly go.

Don’t forget November is National Epilepsy Awareness Month! There are so many opportunities to Get Informed & Get Involved throughout November.
